Naomi Sussmann

Naomi Sussmann holds a PhD in philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prior to studying philosophy, Naomi graduated in architecture from the Technion, Haifa (1995) and was a practicing architect in Tel Aviv for several years. Since completing her dissertation (2004) - on the concept of the political found in/extractable from the writings of Machiavelli, Hobbes and Carl Schmitt, and offered as a corrective/alternative to current political-liberalism - she has been a visiting fellow at the Social and Political Theory program (SPT), RSSS, ANU (Australia) for one year; held several consecutive post-doctoral fellowships at Haifa University (VATAT 2005-6; 2006-7; HUMAINE [Human-Machine Interaction Network on Emotion; EU Sixth Framework Program] 2007-8); was a research fellow at HUJI, 2007-8, and taught at the philosophy department, Haifa University. In 2008-2010 Naomi was a Senior Research Fellow at the Kogod Center for advanced studies, Shalom Hartman Institute, Jerusalem, and a member of the Lexicon for Political Theory research group, The Minerva Humanities Center, Tel-Aviv University. 

Naomi works in political and moral philosophy, with special interest in the history of philosophy and intellectual history more broadly conceived. She has written and published on the political philosophy of Hobbes and Machiavelli; on terrorism; and on the philosophy of emotion. She is also co-editing a volume of essays on the political thought of Michael Walzer entitled "Reading Walzer: Sovereignty, Culture, Justice" due to appear with Routledge in early 2012.
