Why did you choose ECLA?
The choice was very simple: I tried to find at least one institution that would be similar to ECLA and failed. With its great variety of courses, small seminar groups, and a wonderful campus ECLA seemed a perfect place to study. I have a degree in political science, but at some point I realized it was not the field I wanted to focus on. Here at ECLA I can study art history, philosophy, film studies and languages without focusing on a particular subject, but also progressing greatly in each field of knowledge.
What was the most interesting course for you so far and why?
When I am asked about my favourite ECLA course I understand that the person who asked the question is not from here. Here we know that each subject we study is interesting and different from the others. Let's take the 'Outsiders' course we had last term as an example. It was a film class aimed at analyzing the character of an 'outsider' in film, based on social and psychological factors. Not only did I learn to approach films from a completely different angle, but also to find closer relationships between individuals and society they live in. Weekly film screenings were also exciting.
What's your favourite activity outside the classroom?
It is incredibly difficult to name only one activity. I regularly go to Spok, the sports club the students have access to. A modern fitness center with all necessary facilities, going there is both relaxing and energizing - what else would a student need outside the classroom? Secondly, I do greatly enjoy ECLA choir sessions; before coming here I didn't even think that I could sing. And the third is, of course, Berlin itself with its enormous variety of activities, starting from exhibitions, performances, workshops, and finishing with calm Saturday evenings at some bubble tea cafes.
When/if a friend comes to Berlin, where do/would you take them?
I'd definitely take them to ECLA in order to encourage them to apply. Further plans would depend on their tastes and preferences, as Berlin has lots of things to offer even to the most demanding visitors. Are you fond of art? - We'll go to Gemäldegalerie, which is my favourite museum in Berlin. Looking for some special picturesque places? - Gärten der Welt, a beautiful park representing the garden culture of several different countries is waiting. Want to relax after a tiring day? - Well, come to ECLA, and I'll tell you about my secret favourite places.
In your view, what is the value of a liberal arts education?
Liberal arts education helps you to comprehend things systematically and approach a subject of study as a whole, which is so very important for each profession you might choose. With this education you can try yourself in different spheres, e.g. journalism, politics, and art history; each profession is open for you because you know how to deal with the things that previously could seem unrelated. Before coming to ECLA I felt frustrated, as I didn't know what I would like to do in future; and now I just have too many options for my future career.
